Elementary School
Childhood Development
Elementary school children are very energetic, learn by hands on activities, and enjoy exploring. The elementary school years involve learning massive amounts of knowledge and children can have a sense of confidence or inferiority during this time. Children perform concrete operations, but are usually unable to reason abstractly.
Elementary school children listen more to their parents and get a great deal of their security and identity from their families. Children at this age are learning how to operate in various social settings and often do or say whatever is on their minds without giving it much thought.
These children are growing rapidly, usually having major growth spurts in first grade and fourth-fifth grade. Their bodies begin getting ready for puberty between 4-6 grade, and this can cause some embarrasment and frustration for them.
